Mass Infection: For I am genocide
27/05/14 || The Duff
Mass Infection is a Greek death metal band and I’m guessing there is something in the water out there because they sound almost identical to Turkey’s Decaying Purity. Cyprus, I have found the resolution to your woes, it is catchy brutal death metal. This is their third record, the follow-up to “The Age of Recreation”, and considering the title “I Am Genocide”, the radical shift in subject matter means a band member was forced to flush a guinea pig down the toilet or something.
At what point do you go from “Everything is Lovely” to “The Holocaust”? Maybe Hitler was an okay dude after all. Maybe his father was just uncouth telling him of Mr. Snuggles and his trip to the rabbit-farm. “But then why does he smell of man-ass Pappy?” Hitler might have asked, to which his father may’ve responded “Shhh, Schproutlein-Hitler – ist von aschenvortz rabbitten? Yooden”. And thus history was born – this metal album is inferno, let me tell you.
So other bands of the Greek scene I’m aware of are Dead Congregation, Terrordrome and Sickening Horror – these last two are currently pushing the scene forward, but this record then perhaps sounds like the former’s “Vehement Convulsion” merely better arranged and of a clearer production – similarities with the crystal-crunch, razor-sharp but ultimately catchy death metal in the same vein as Decaying Purity’s “The Existence of Infinite Agony” cannot be avoided, but that album was killer, so…
The band never eschews the uncompromising yet catchy nature of the music for technicality, but there are certainly melodies here that demand a certain level of practice; the band’s furore predominantly comes from drummer George T., as with Decaying Purity, it seems that this side of the globe is becoming a force to be reckoned with, both bands writing some of the most memorable death metal in a long time; I’ve these days lost the patience for bands that write riffs in cycles of four but not when they are this good.
For fans of Hate Eternal/Insision/Origin, Mass Infection are a passionate band putting out some of the sub-genre’s best; when I thought that I only had time for the dizzying complexities of brutal death metal bands like Defeated Sanity, Putridity, Disgorge, Mass Infection come along to prove that when done right then classic songwriting equally has its place among the elite, that idolizing the greats still has something to prove when almost all else is trying to push the limits to ridiculous extremes.
